My Students

My school community includes a large population of Hispanic immigrants and middle eastern refugees.

With over 79% of my students being economically disadvantaged and 17% with limited English proficiency, they enter my middle school science classroom facing many obstacles.

But these challenges become opportunities for developing grit and growing a passion for learning as I strive to engage them in science that addresses real world phenomena with 21st-century solutions. They just need some 21st-century science tools to help them reach their potential.

My Project

My 6th graders are learning about thermal energy. As part of this unit, we are learning about heat conduction. To really engage students and help them visibly witness the effect of conductors and insulators, we need ice melting blocks.

With these special ice melting blocks, students will be able to see how ice melts almost instantly on one block and not the other.

They also notice that one block feels noticeably colder than the other. This lab helps to address a common misconception that metal objects are colder because they feel colder. But by carrying out the lab, students learn the real reason...and it has to do with thermal conduction.

I have tried this lab using readily available materials, but the effect is rather boring and lengthy. With these special blocks, the effect is quick, clear and most helpful to student understanding.
