My Students

My historians love looking at the past from multiple perspectives and digging into complicated events that have varying interpretations. We often debate and discuss the past in order to better understand the experiences of those who are different from us and better understand the world around us.

My students come from a variety of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, and about 60% of them receive free and reduced price lunch.

They are very curious about the world around them, and enjoy making connections between their lives in Chicago and the experiences of those a world away.

My Project

As a World History teacher it's important to me that my students are able to empathize with stories and cultures across time periods and continents. In order to increase their exposure to various cultures around the world, I created a bookshelf with novels from various regions around the world (thanks to generous contributions from DonorsChoose.org donors!) Since doing so I have had several students check out books to learn more about places and cultures they were curious about.

However, last week I realized that my Latin America section was a bit lacking when a student requested a book related to Mexican history, explaining that he wanted to feel more connected to his own identity and culture.

This inspired me to add some fresh voices to my bookshelf by requesting more books that represent perspectives that my students might be able to connect with. My goal is to provide more opportunities for my students to grow and learn through studying the past; sometimes that might be through reading a novel that reflects their own experiences, and other times it might be through reading a novel that provides a window into another world.
