Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my school's families are low income, with almost 80% of our school population on free/ reduced lunch. We also have families that are considered transient or homeless, with many living in hotels. My school also has a high population of families that are English language learners, which means that English is NOT their first language. Our families work very hard, but there are times that they are unsure of how to engage their students in learning. My school values family and community, and we work hard to ensure that all students, are provided the absolute best opportunities for success.

My students are energetic learners, that value having several different ways to learn.

While they love learning, they also love moving! I have found that many of students prefer to work in alternate places, not at their desks, while some like to be able to move while working. Because of the many ways my students, like many other adults learn, I would like to find ways for them to have alternative seating opportunities in the classroom.

My Project

My last project consisted of balance balls for my wiggly students. The balance balls are amazing, and I'm hoping to add a few more for some of my taller students to use as well. The students also loved the seat cushions from our last project, and quickly requested that we get a few more. They have been using the balance balls & seat cushions to be comfortable when working independently. I have seen such a huge change in their focus that I want to continue the momentum to encourage them to learn and work hard. Seeing the change in how they work is so encouraging!
