Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Chicago inner-city school where materials and activities outside the classroom are considered a luxury for some. Unfortunately, at times that has included basic classroom supplies. As the 8th grade ELA teacher, I find it necessary for my students to have the correct tools in their learning which, hopefully, will lead to a love of reading and writing in the classroom so my students can become lifelong learners both in and out of the classroom.
My Project
I have a small group of students for a creative writing/poetry class I see weekly. During this class I encourage my students to explore topics and write outside their comfort zones by writing about what matters to them, but in a poetic way. I would like to give each student a gift of a writing journal along with colored pens to spark their creativity. These items are different from our usual classroom supplies in my ELA class. I think new writing supplies will excite them to write. These separate materials for my special creative writing/poetry class will be given to each student to keep and continue to write in on their own.
