Adding Color to the World

My students need tempera and acrylic paint to enhance their drawings, paintings, sculpture, and clay projects.

My Students

My students are constantly begging me to use paint in their art classes, but I have empty bottles and only a few colors. My brushes are old and falling apart. They are very limited by this and need new colors and enough paint to complete the wonderful projects that I know they are capable of.

My students attend an urban, inner city school in Connecticut.

The majority qualify for free and reduced lunch. In order for my students to have a well-rounded education, the arts are an integral part. By practicing visual arts, it has been shown that students can improve concentration and focus in other academic areas. Students who often struggle with other aspects of school find a refuge in making and creating art.

My Project

By having access to tempera, acrylic paint and paintbrushes, my students from kindergarten all the way to eighth grade will be able to learn how to hold their brush, care for it, keep it clean, and learn how to mix colors. They will be able to not only create paintings, but use paint to enhance their sculptures and clay creations too.

Students who come to art class and do not get a chance to use paint are missing out on an integral part of their art education.

Not only is painting an important part of the curriculum in our district, students learn about color theory and how to care for their art supplies in a meaningful way. Who knows, maybe some day they will choose painting or art education as a career!
