Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students experience difficulties both academically and socially. Their problems relate to their home situations, financial stability, poor parental involvement and lack of motivation. This transfers negatively into their learning. As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, I would like my students to experience learning in an enjoyable environment. I want to provide activities where they would be engaged and thrilled and get the chance to change their negative feelings of learning into positive ones.

My students need to believe in themselves, that they can be creative thinkers and assets to the community.

Therefore, these activities/projects will give them the chance to do so.

My Project

Hurricane Maria has not only affected the people of Puerto Rico, but it has also affected us in Florida. We are faced with making adjustments in our classrooms to accommodate the students of Puerto Rico who were displaced due to this disaster. Our enrollment increased so it affected the student to computer ratio.

Like any other disaster, Hurricane Maria brought a lot of turmoil and grief to the families of Puerto Rico.

They had to adjust to a new lifestyle in a new country, and starting new schools with new friends. This experience could have cultural and social complications for these students. They would have to readjust to many of their lifestyle conditions, curriculum and teaching. I want to help make the adjustment easy by making them feel welcomed and fit in with the rest of my students. This is why I am requesting the printer and computer to help make the work easier and fun for my students.

The printer would be most beneficial to help them feel proud as they display their work and projects in a professional way. They would be thrilled seeing their work in print with beautiful graphics since they can now type their projects and add graphics, charts and graphs and print them in color.

Since students are expected to have a certain amount of time on the computer, the new computer would allow most my students to maintain their computer use. My new students would feel at home away from home and not think they are intruding, and my immediate students would not have to share time.
