My Students

My students are all the 3rd and 4th graders in our town. They receive instruction in music twice a week for 30 minutes per period. Each class size is roughly 20-25 students. During class we sing, say, dance, and play instruments. We do not have enough instruments for all students, and this project will help give more students access to instruments. In addition, it will allow students to experience a wider variety of musical texture and timbre by adding sounds that are unlike any others we have available in our classroom.

My Project

These percussion instruments will add color to our classroom...musical color that is. One of the music vocabulary words my students study is timbre (pronounced TAM-ber). The definition of timbre is the character or quality of a musical sound as distinct from its pitch and intensity. These instruments have distinct sounds that will add to the musical color palette of our lessons and compositions. Our classroom has few auxiliary percussion instruments, and most of those are in poor condition. To continue the tradition of music making, we need to rebuild our collection and add to it with a variety of percussion instruments. These instruments are unlike anything we currently have. They will make music making more interesting and fun!
