Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students in my class are in table-group teams that earn points when every member of the team gets to work, completes the work, follows classroom management instructions in a timely manner and of course show respect for all. At the end of each week, the team with the most points gets to go to the prize box to select two items. Even with only a small selection of prizes so far this year, the students have proven that they appreciate the team-challenge, LOVE to win, and that these behaviors translate to more efficient academic time. The team points rise to the millions and therefore students are constantly comparing large numbers, evaluating their chances, and setting goals as a team to earn more points!
These prizes will go a long way toward motivating students to focus, stay on task, be respectful of each other and their teachers, and to remind each other that working together can bring critical intrinsic rewards as well as extrinsic rewards.
Students have already learned that respectful motivation of their teammates can earn them additional points. That assisting each other with work using their words, not copying each other's work, earns them points. They are finding that not only does satisfaction come from learning, but that they can work toward earning an "income." I feel that with these incentives, my 9- and 10-year-old students will gain an initial understanding of how the economy can function as adult wage-earners.
