Adaptive Seating for Speech Therapy

My students need adaptive seating, or transition chairs in my office to maximize their education in order to make transportation easier.

My Students

I work in an inner-city school district, and all of my students are in various self-contained classrooms throughout the school with varying developmental disabilities. Approximately 10 of my students are in special adaptive seating, or transition chairs to maximize their education throughout the day. They all receive speech therapy 1-2 times per week and due to attention deficits, pull-out speech therapy in my office occasionally reaps the most benefits for my students. However, due to a high caseload, these children cannot be taken individually and need to be taken in groups. My students are in the need of the best service possible for all of their individual needs.

My Project

Imagine this, transitioning 4-5 nonverbal, severely developmentally delayed kindergartners to speech therapy 1-2 times a week. Many of these students have adaptive seating needs which have to be carried up to therapy. During this transportation time, many of these students have behavior needs and need hands to be held, doors to be held, and help going up and down the stairs. While carrying 1-2 adaptive seats I am unable to assist my students in this these various needs. These adaptive seats will be stationed in my office and will assist my students, as well as myself, transitioning the students to the speech therapy room from the classroom and vice versa.
