My Project

My department provides instruction for students with significant developmental disabilities that dictate that they receive a significantly modified curriculum. All 46 of my students require instruction provided with reduced depth and scope and highly structured lessons with significant visual and verbal support. My students' developmental and functional levels range from 15 months to early elementary. 10 of my students have severe or profound cognitive impairments, 5 have visual impairments, and the rest have moderate cognitive impairment and coexisting conditions such as Autism or Traumatic Brain injury. In addition to having pervasive developmental disabilities, 15 of my students are English language learners.

The students in my department have various sensory needs that impact their learning.

Sensory regulation tools such as swings help meet students' needs for vestibular regulation. When student's sensory needs are met they are better able to focus and regulate their bodies. One of the most difficult needs to meet in the classroom setting is those that need vestibular input. Vestibular regulation activity typically requires whole-body engagement and movement. The vestibular system can impact arousal, attention, emotional regulation, movement, communication, motor planning, vision, posture, spatial and temporal functions, coordination, sensory regulation, and executive functions. To support our student's vestibular regulation needs I want to provide a hammock chair for each of my department 4 classrooms and all 46 of the students in our program. The Timber Ridge Hammock Camping Chair can support up to 300 pounds, has a low profile, and requires limited floor space. This chair will easily fit into our classrooms and provide me with a safe option to meet students' needs. Currently, a student seeking vestibular input would need to leave the classroom to go for a walk or access the school's gym. These chairs will provide an appropriate option in the classroom.
