Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district in Chicago , my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students are diverse learners who have communication and learning disorders. They are lovable, energetic kids who need new technology to allow them the opportunity to communicate and learn. Some have autism, some have receptive and/or expressive language deficits, and some have articulation disorders that make them hard to understand. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students thrive on using hands on materials that stimulate their learning.
The ability to use their hands and manipulate objects helps keep their minds focused on the task at hand.
My Project
Learning is always fun when your materials are hands on and engaging. These materials will give my students the opportunity to use materials that they wouldn't normally get to use in a general education classroom.
Diverse learners are students who learn best when they can move, use their body and manipulate objects.
All of these materials will help my students learn while they are doing small group lessons with me or working independently. The boogie boards will be a fun and creative way to engage my students in learning how to write letters, numbers and sight words. Pencil weights, palm weights and adaptive scissors will help my students with writing and cutting while doing work. Timers will help my students stay on track during work and will give them the visual they need to help them transition from one activity to another. Fidget toys will give my students the ability to use an object while sitting during a group lesson and concentrate on the task at hand. Chew pedants will allow my students to release that fixation of chewing on their clothing without ruining their clothes.
My students need the ability to use adaptive materials in the classroom to begin learning about literacy and mathematics concepts while in school. These materials will provide a vehicle through which this can happen. With help from you, my students will use these items daily to help strengthen skills they need to be successful learners.
