My Project

An adaptive bike will allow all students to learn how to ride a bike for joy, exercise, and transportation. During our gym class, occupational and physical therapy, summer school, and after-school programming students in grades 2-5 at our inclusive school have the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike. Right now, the program is opt-in and students with physical disabilities typically choose not to participate without access to a bike that is appropriate for their physical needs. Making sure that all students are empowered to learn how to ride a bike can provide a further array of life skills, accessibility to the world around them, and choice and empowerment. I have noticed the joy, confidence, sensory regulation and physicality that develop in students when they learn how to ride a bike and get opportunities to bike at school, especially for students with disabilities. This is most true for neurodivergent students with Autism, ADHD, etc. They are able to focus better, have more stamina, and become increasingly willing to tackle challenges academically and emotionally.

My students are noticeably more enthusiastic about school when they participate in the bicycling program.

The bicycle that I have selected will help all of my students to participate in bicycling by making sure that the range of equipment available meets every child's physical needs. Research indicates

"that a brief (15-minute) dose of low to moderate physical activity can induce significant changes in cognitive performance and...focus, motivation, and relaxation." (Bailey et al., 2021)

I have seen how biking can positively impact my students academic, physical, and social-emotional wellbeing and hope that the program will become open to even more students with the addition of an adaptive bike!
