Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This classroom includes students at higher risk for behavior and academic problems. Students in this program have been identified as unable to participate in the general ed environment safely. Having an environment where they can move seats, use a a toy for emotional regulation, and not contend with the glare from the giant windows in the room, is key to their success.
This list includes many items that can help students to not only manage difficult emotions, but also learn through play and engage in creative activities.
Some students struggle to maintain body control; these items would allow them to release that energy in a more productive way. We have some alternative seating now that has shown to be very effective with some students; however, we don't have as much as we need and students are requesting other types of seating.
Having a variety of fidgets also allows students to use excess energy and supports teaching them replacement behavior for difficult feelings. Items like this are incredibly effective because they can become easy accommodations in adulthood unlike other accommodations that can only apply to the school setting (such as extra time or preferred seating). Emotional regulation is one of the most important skills to develop for these students and will be the basis of their reentry into the general education environment.
