My Students

Teaching children with special needs is truly amazing! I have the privilege of teaching children with profound learning disabilities from kindergarten to sixth grade. I go to my class everyday looking forward to seeing their smiles and helping them achieve their goals. Not only do my students have special needs, but at our school more than fifty percent of students are Black, Latinx, and/or Native Hawaiian, and more than fifty percent come from low-income households.

My Project

The materials and books I am requesting will allow me to adapt books for challenged readers. This will give every student the opportunity to participate in classroom reading and lessons. Adding differentiated supports in books will allow for better understanding, as well as interactive pieces to help students participate in whole class lessons.

Adapting books for students with severe disabilities will allow them to access curriculum in a meaningful way!

Every child should have the opportunity to follow along and read books with their peers as well as interact with the lesson and story. These items will allow me to make stories more interactive. The printer ink will allow me to print icons in color (at school we are provided a black/white printer), the Velcro will allow me to place interactive icons into the books to help students' understanding and motivate them to follow along with the class. The books that I have chosen are ideal for turning into interactive books because of the simplicity of the literary elements. Thank you in advanced for considering funding my students' project!
