Adapted Books and Calming Spaces!

My students need room dividers and calming bottles to enhance our calming corner, and a display shelf and binding machine so I can create and display adapted books to allow them access our favorite picture books!

My Students

I teach a group of seven very special kiddos who have autism. They are currently in first and second grade and are impacted by their autism either socially, academically, or both. The students in our class come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of different academic, social, and emotional needs.

My students thrive on structure, visuals, positive reinforcement, and being in an environment where they are allowed to be themselves.

Along with academics, it is our goal is that our students gain independence and social skills so they may have the same opportunities as their peers.

My Project

Many of my students struggle with self-regulation, so I am in the process of creating a calming corner in our classroom. The room dividers and items for the calming bottles will enhance this space and give them an opportunity to learn how to regulate their behavior.

My students also LOVE picture books!

Many of the picture books we read aloud in our classroom and enjoy in our classroom library are above my students' decoding or comprehension level. Using the binding machine, I can adapt our favorite books to allow my students access to independent reading of their favorite books! A sturdy shelf will allow me to display these books for them to see and choose on their own.
