AdaptABILITY 2: Adapting Toys and Devices for Special Education

My Students

Working in special education, I see so many different types of kiddos every day. Currently, I work for a special education co-op that services over 10 different schools in a rural county north of Waco, Texas. In addition to seeing kids for speech therapy services at three different schools in the county, I am also the Assistive Technology Coordinator for our co-op. That makes me responsible for making sure any student that is struggling to succeed in their classroom with typically available technology and supports is considered for assistive technology devices and services.

Because their needs are so vast, and oftentimes very specific, it takes a lot of different materials and tools to give our students the best learning environment possible.

Some students need supports for reading and writing, while others need help with mobility, positioning, sensory processing issues, communication, and much more.

My Project

Due to the physical and intellectual limitations of some of students, it’s sometimes difficult for them to activate and engage with traditional toys and devices. Either they can’t use the on/off switch because of their poor fine motor skills, or they don’t yet understand the concept of cause/effect.

My students need toys and devices - like bubble machines, massage pillows, fans, and toy trains - to be adapted with input jacks so they can be activated with an external capability switch to increase their independence and confidence in the classroom.

I want to give my students the ability to turn on and play with toys without having to rely on others to do it for them. They deserve the chance to do things independently as much as possible. These tools will help them accomplish that!
