Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My honors astronomy students are enrolled in a science elective class. They work every day to understand the mysteries of the universe. My students have typically taken biology, chemistry, and/or physics before my class, so I try to connect the universe to their life in the most applicable ways I can find. It's not always easy to show students how distant galaxies and stars are connected to them, yet astronomy remains a science that speaks to so many students and makes them want to learn more.
My students now have knowledge they want to share with others at our school.
Your support would help us partner with our students with exceptionalities, invite them into our classroom, and to help them learn about space science, too.
My Project
Students in honors astronomy will help guide our students with exceptionalities through the experience the engineering design process. The rocket design and building will invite new students into our classroom to make connections with those they may not encounter in their typical classroom. After making connections and learning about the students, we will guide them through the launch and calculation process.
This project will not only allow all types of students to experience hands-on engineering and science, but will also allow students to work with and learn with students they may not ever see on our large campus.
These resources will connect classrooms, students, and teachers through science.
Specifically, the rockets will be used to help honors astronomy students teach our visiting students with exceptionalities the different parts of a rocket and how they fit together. They will design, measure, build, and engineer together to ensure every student has their own rocket to launch. The launch pads and launch materials (recovery wadding) will help us to get our rockets off the ground and back to us safely on launch day. Recovering the rockets will ensure our students can keep their design with them and share their experience with their families and friends at home.
