Activities to Promote Educational and Social Success

My Students

Remember sitting in class and being bored because all you did was read, write, and get lectured at. Blech, that sounds awful. That's not what I am as a teacher. I want learning to be fun. I want kids to WANT to close their education gaps with fun interventions and games.

I work at school that has over 70% free and reduced lunch.

Every student in our school gets a free breakfast. All after school programs are supplied with enough meals for every child that shows up. This is truly a community of poverty. Many kids are from single parent homes where the parent works multiple jobs. They don't have nice things. They don't get a chance to play games and learn in a fun environment all time. These kids are often responsible for watching after their younger siblings and don't get the time to work on things like social skills or educational foundation skills; they need to worry about survival. I wish I was being overly dramatic but that's the reality for the children with whom I work. Something as simple as a Cribbage game can be the bridge these children need to practice their math skills or their social skills.

My Project

My students are going to use these games to build both their social and educational skills. As children of poverty, they are lacking in both of these areas and all too often aren't given the chance to do something simple like learn a set of rules and play a game with a friend. We have a 30 minute intervention block every day that these kids look forward to because they know they are going to get to do something fun while still learning. Adding to my collection of games and activities is going to keep my students engaged and excited throughout the school year.

I am expecting that these activities are going to teach my students about being kind and playing fair.

Something as simple as taking turns is a struggle for a lot of my students. This is a fun and exciting way to practice these skills while still sneaking in some academics at the same time. This will improve their lives by teaching them how to be competent members of a civil society. My kids are by no means bad people but they just lack some skills that you and I take for granted.
