Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Our location is the primary high school for students with Autism in our district, with a population of diagnosed individuals growing exponentially each year. The items requested will be used to create a model studio apartment to foster independent living for our high school students with Autism. We have the designated location within our school, and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) is included in their schedule. However, the room is void of furniture and supplies, so no one uses it with their students. If we are successful, our students with Autism will be able to learn how to set the alarm, make their bed, iron their clothes, get dressed for "work," make breakfast, and clean the kitchen, all of the expectations of someone living independently. Our instructional staff will implement evidence-based practices such as Task Analysis, Visual Supports, and backward chaining to ensure the acquisition of skills while monitoring and tracking our students' progress. As we near the end of Autism Acceptance Month, let's demonstrate our support by providing this population of students with an ADL room that would foster their learning and growth!
