Everyday, students are bombarded with thousands of ads, logos and other visual displays trying to tell them what to wear, how to act and what to think. It is time for them to create their own message!
My students are part of a tight-knit, rural community.
They love coming to school everyday and can't wait for the chance to show off their knowledge. Despite their low-income status, they all contribute to their town through community service and other means. It is great to see how much pride they have in their school, education and community.
My Project
My students will be using the printing supplies to create shirts that allow them to be actively engaged in society. They will create a shirt that protests a wrong that is occurring or promotes a good that can be done. The project is called "Activist Art" because it will encourage students to become active members of their world and the visual culture that surrounds them on a daily basis.
This project will show students that they don't have to sit and passively accept what is happening around them.
They can make a difference using their own knowledge, talents and art. Students will learn that they don't have to accept the stereotypes, misrepresentations or lies that are often portrayed on TV, radio and advertisements. Students can create their own media and control their own visual consumption by creating it themselves.
