Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9- and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, not only were the kids wanting to come back but we aldo missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

It is important to have conversations involving the disparity in education and the effects in computer science. In order to increase the minority population in careers in computer science, we need to expose students to STEM. We need to advocate and develop a curriculum that elevates the progression to better prepare to utilize computer science. Talking about race, although hard is necessary because race is a defining social construct in American life. It is important to engage in thoughtful, respectful, and productive conversations. Especially with all the issues going on with the BLM and how this has affected our life. In the absence of making anti-racist choices, we (un)consciously uphold aspects of white supremacy, white-dominant culture, and unequal institutions and society.

I will like to provide my students with t-shirts, 3D printer, filament, and 3D pen that will empower them to be STEM students and to wear in their club.

As students of color and minorities, I want them to be able to feel empowered joining the STEM/Coding club.

It is important for students to learn about empowering their voice to stand up for their education. Activism is important to learn at a young age. Students need to learn that their voice can make a difference. This project is student-driven, I mentioned to my students about the STEM club this school year and how it will be canceled because there are no funds. They were not happy, and they stated it wasn't fair.

This is why I would like to integrate STEM in science and social studies because my students need to learn to become activists and talk about race and defining social constructs in American and become innovators and activists.
