Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a group of active 9, 10, and 11 year old youngsters, who love having fun and getting physically fit on the field! Whether it is running laps, playing an organized sport, or completing drills and exercises, my students welcome any physical activity challenge.
My students represent a very mixed population both culturally and economically, and despite challenges, they always give their own personal best and push to succeed!
I teach at a Title I school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hard working students and partner with a group of supportive parents who share the common goal of a quality education for their children.
My Project
Keeping active throughout the school day doesn't have to just occur outside on the yard! My students' idea was to have an opportunity to have classroom movement breaks using online physical education programs such as GoNoodle. They also wanted to access You Tube channels featuring Zumba kids and yoga. A television is needed for viewing these physical education online video, and iPad mini 3 and Apple TV are necessary to access the online physical education programs to cast onto the television.
Physical education online videos such as GoNoodle, offer activity breaks that can be used to get kids moving throughout the school day without leaving the classroom!
Dancing, jumping, and jogging in place are all movements that will contribute towards kids meeting their goal of 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Practicing yoga will teach my student mindfulness and help them to be better focused when they have to return to their academics. Students need correct modeling of these movements in order to work the right muscles safely. Therefore, there is value learning from the "experts" through the online video presentations.
To integrate the resources into the classroom experience, students will not only use the iPad mini 3 to link to the sites to cast, they will also use the iPad to access nutritional sites such as ChooseMyPlate.gov and will set up a personalized nutrition and physical activity plan with SuperTracker. Students will write a script and use the iPad to film a public service announcement to share with their peers.
The use of these materials will increase the overall health and activity level of my students by first and foremost getting them active! It is my hope that that being active today will lead them to a healthier and active future.
