My Students

Help my students move to learn and learn to move! Movement is the best tool to teach music, and my students need materials so that they can learn in this fabulous way. After sitting at their desk for most of their day, they need exercise and the opportunity to move.

Music makes my students wiggle and dance!

They love to move around our classroom and we have all found that movement is the best way to learn about rhythms, the form of a song, and expression. My students need materials in order to learn through movement. My students love music. They love to dance. They attend a school of 650 students in Georgia and many of them receive free or reduced lunch. My students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and our diversity allows us to have a fabulous time together! I have found that they learn best when giving the opportunity to explore through movement. We are fortunate to have a large space in which we do folk dancing and creative movement. My students need materials that will help them structure their movement by marking spots on the floor. They also need tools that will assist them in learning through movement.

My Project

My project utilizes poly spots and bean bags. Poly spots will mark spots on the floor for anything from dancing to sitting. Poly spots may also be marked with a symbol on tape so students can actively learn rhythmic symbols and other music notation. Can you imagine the fun when we play fruit basket turn over? "All of the students on quarter notes, trade places! All of the students on half notes, trade places!" We will use the bean bags in passing games as well as song games. The bean bags are marked with the alphabet, so we will have the potential to create words and song lyrics to go with each letter.

This project is so important because I am positive that my students learn at their best when moving, and we need these materials in order for them to do so.

Without these materials, there are many activities that we will not be able to do, and valuable lessons will not be accessible to my students. They are going to LOVE what I have planned for them! I can't wait!
