My Project

As with most schools throughout the country, our district has seen a reduction in funding, resulting in the restructuring of classes to cope with the loss. Unfortunately for our sixth-grade students, this has led to the loss of a few days of physical education. Combined with the fact that middle school students have less than ten minutes of recess per day, our students desperately need opportunities for movement. In sixth grade, one option we faced was to combine ELA and Reading classes. However, since middle school in our district marks the first year without supplemental reading support, it's crucial to maintain reading as a separate class to bridge that gap.

The walking pads and standing desks will serve as opportunities for movement within the classroom setting, which will help improve students' ability to concentrate and retain what they're learning.

Simultaneously, it will serve as a means to reduce stress and anxiety. The goal of this project is clear: meet the needs of our students so they can learn. I hope that by providing students with more opportunities to move their bodies, we will see a reduction in disruptive behaviors, an increase in academic performance, and overall happier students.

The students in our rural K-12 school have a unique sense of community and determination that sets them apart. Growing up in a small town often means that students have limited access to resources and opportunities. However, our students have shown incredible flexibility and resilience in coping with the challenges posed by funding loss. Despite these obstacles, they have developed close-knit ties to their community, strong relationships with each other, and especially with their teachers. It is because of these characteristics that I strive to provide them with every advantage possible; simply put, they deserve it.
