My Students

I am a 5th grade math/science teacher. My school is a title 1 elementary school meaning that it services at risk children from low income households. My fifth grade students are amazing and every year I strive to make learning math and science an active learning process. I work hard to meet the needs of each student which is so important in a title 1 school. You will not see a lot of whole group teaching. My kids are up and moving around. They often work as groups at learning tables, extend their learning by working on the floor in small groups and are up charting their findings on chart paper stapled to the classroom wall.

My Project

There was one thing my classroom needed and that was a community rug. A place where my students would be able to comfortably gather to learn new objectives and share scientific discoveries. Every year, every teacher spends a great deal of their own money in their classroom and I am no exception. My splurge for the the 2017-2018 school year was going to be a quality classroom rug as I have been using 2 smaller inexpensive rugs. I am a teacher in an area that was directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey and my classroom took longer to come together than planned. On the first day of our delayed start, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer. Talk about sending your life upside down. Needless to say, money I had intended to use to purchase a classroom rug became money I will need to pay my doctor bills. I work in a title 1 school and always have throughout my career.

I do everything I can to make sure that my classroom is comfortable and engaging because my students often do not go home to comfortable houses.

My students deserve a quality classroom rug and I do not want my medical expenses to get in the way of their learning needs.

I am also requesting a glider and ottoman which I am sure seems very strange. My colorectal cancer treatment plan has started with chemotherapy and I am being as proactive as I can to be in the classroom. Nephropathy has made it hard to get around the classroom. A soft place to sit and work with my students will be important in my ability to stay in the classroom as long as possible.
