This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think of a classroom of 30 general education and diverse learner students in the city of Chicago who are all expected to be able to focus for several hours a day sitting in a chair in a classroom. These students are in an inclusion classroom with students with individualized education plans and general education students. Some of these students come from low income households where parents work more than one job in order to put food on the table for their families.

Over 95% of the students at my school qualify for free lunch.

My class consists of 30% diverse learners. These students have exceptional needs, as well as goals that need to be met by the end of the year on the NWEA standardized test. These high stakes tests can put extra anxiety or stress on the students and cause them to need more movement and flexibility within the classroom.

My Project

The chair bands will serve as an accommodation to students who tend to get fidgety at their desks. The students will be able to use the bands when they are feeling unmotivated to complete their work due to sitting for so long.

Chair bands will give my motivated learners the chance to work off some of that extra energy they have developed throughout the day.

Considering the challenge of spending most of the 6 school hours on classroom chair, this flexible seating will allow them to focus on their learning instead. This type of seating will allow for much needed accommodations for all learners.
