Active Inside and Out

My Students

My class is full of creative, energetic, and hard-working students. They love reading books, cracking jokes, coloring pictures, making art projects, and learning new things. They are very curious and are constantly asking questions.

As a special education teacher, most of my students are below grade level and are working hard to catch up to their peers.

Our Title I school has more than 80% of our population receiving free or reduced-price lunches. More than half of our students are English language learners. It's important to give these students a quality education early, to instill a love of learning while they are still young.

School should be a place where students feel safe and are able to gain skills and knowledge that will help them be successful in future careers. I strive to give them as many opportunities to learn these things as I can.

My Project

It's a well-known fact that children need exercise for their health and well-being. Currently, my students have a lunch recess and a 15-minute recess in the afternoon. They have so much energy throughout the morning that it's often difficult for them to stay focused. They need more time to run, play, and be physically active.

Adding an extra recess is not in my power, but these rocking chairs will give my students an outlet for their energy and a way to stay fit and healthy while learning in our classroom.

Studies have shown that when students are given seating that allows them to move, they perform better in class and have higher attention spans. Flexible seating, such as these rocking chairs, challenges students to remain active throughout the day, instead of only during recess and P.E.

Having these rockers in my classroom will increase my students' motivation to be physically fit while also providing an outlet for their ample amounts of energy, helping them concentrate better during our lessons and activities.
