My students need more tools for their ELA and Math practice stations. With manipulatives like play-doh, building bricks, and alphabet stamps, my students will be able to strengthen their knowledge of letters, sounds, sights words, and numbers.
Our school serves students with a range of abilities and disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, physically fragile, and specific learning disabilities.
Many of my students come from homes filled with economic hardship and trauma.
65% of our students are African American, 35% are Hispanic. We have the highest percentage of students with an Individualized education plan (IEP) in the district and in my class alone, I have 2 IEPs and 3 English Language Learners. Our classroom is humble and inviting, and contains little technology and manipulatives. I have English as a Second Language teachers and Special Education teachers visiting my classroom often.
My Project
It's a proven fact that hands-on learning strengthens and deepens a student's understanding of a topic. With these literacy and mathematics tools, the students in my classroom will be able engage in meaningful word-work and number-work activities that go beyond paper and pencil.
The alphabet stamps, paint dobbers, and building bricks will provide my students with engaging ways to build their knowledge of sight words, spelling words, spelling patterns, and symbol/sound recognition.
Likewise, the building bricks will provide students with engaging math opportunities that will involve measurement, data collection, arrays, and more. Most importantly, these tools and manipulatives will meet the diverse needs of readers and learners in my classroom.
