I teach two 82 minute blocks of English & two sections of 40 minute A.I.S classes.
My students vary academically, socially & emotionally.
Out of my 40+ students, 22 students have an academic or emotional need.
We are a middle school with 53% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
My students love to move around the room and be comfortable as they read and write. I have two old desk chairs that I award to different students each day.
My 6th grade English classes were designed as 82 minute blocks. That can be a long time for students to stay actively engaged and comfortable.
Providing the opportunity and ability for my students to move about freely is critically important when it comes to being able to focus on classroom work.
Research has proven that movement not only encourages activity, but also enhances students’ ability to engage in learning.
After researching different options for seating, I found the best options were exercise balls, active learning stools & rocker chairs. I have ordered 6 active learning stools through a grant I received from my school district (Union Endicott Education Foundation).
