Creativity, imagination, and collaboration are key components to authentic learning in our classroom. Second graders learn better by moving around and selecting a place to sit where they learn best. By providing soft rugs to cover the cold, hard tile, wobble cushions and stools, I will be able to add more comfortable seating and learning areas in our room for active children to focus on learning.
Our school is a K-2 school with approximately 1,200 kids enrolled.
We have a diverse population of ethnic backgrounds, a growing ELL population, a high percentage of students who need accelerated learning opportunities, and students who need reading and math interventions to help them establish a firm foundation for successful learning. I have many hyperactive students that need to move constantly to maximize their learning. Over the years, I have learned that all students learn best when they are in a comfortable environment where work space choices are available so they may sit alone or with a small group to collaborate. Some enjoy sitting at desks with wobble seats or cushions, bean bags, on the carpet, and on pillows or yoga mats around a coffee table.
My Project
My students need a comfortable rug, wobble chairs and wobble cushions. After researching and watching how kids learn best, I have learned they work their hardest when they are comfortable and when they can collaborate to solve problems. When they enter the classroom, students can select either the traditional desk, bean bag, couch, wobble chairs, pillows and a coffee table seating just to name a few. Some students even learn better standing. From the moment they walk through the door, they will have the opportunity to select where they sit throughout the day. Flexible seating creates a trusting, comfortable and collaborative environment.
Children have different learning and physical needs when it comes to learning.
When the body is active, the brain is active. Students will learn how to choose a spot that is the most conducive to their learning style. It will improve learning and change lives by helping them to stay focused which results in higher achievement. It will help ADHD, autistic and other special needs' kids, develop a sense of community and independence.
