My Students

My students are very active middle school children. They are excited and skilled learners, many of whom I know will assume leadership positions one day. Anyone who knows middle school adolescents, knows that they take ownership of any task they feel invested in, attacking it with zeal and enthusiasm. My class is no different. They are members of a small, secure Midwestern community. Most participate actively in school and civic organizations. They attend school in a state confronted with extreme budgetary concerns, and continue to thrive, despite their schools being increasingly stripped of space and resources. I feel strongly that an investment in this group of learners would be an invaluable one indeed.

My Project

Several formal studies, as well as countless informal assessments, have shown that introducing opportunities for physical activity improves student focus and concentration. Time-on-task increases, and disruptive behaviors are mitigated, when students are comfortable and active as they learn. Our elementary classrooms often accommodate and promote an active learning environment. However, by the time students enter middle school, they're expected to sit in chairs for up to six hours per day, with little to no opportunity for movement.

According to a recent study by the American Heart Association, sitting for several hours a day is even more detrimental than originally thought.

The study states that no amount of exercise negates the unhealthy effects of extended periods of sitting. In addition to my desire to maximize the emotional and physical health of my middle school students, my primary goal is to create the optimal environment for their academic growth and success. These alternative seating options would be a crucial component of this pursuit, and an invaluable addition to my middle school classroom.

It is humbling to watch young learners navigate the demands of a rigorous school day. My hope is that, with the funding of my project, they'll be free to focus their minds upon academic tasks, without the distraction of being physically uncomfortable or constrained. I want my students to be able to release some energy as they work, without worrying about being disruptive. Physical activity breaks in the classroom have been shown to improve cognitive performance, as well as reduce undesirable classroom behaviors. This classroom set of active seating options would keep my students physically active, and mentally engaged, throughout their academic day.
