Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to see the world as an exciting and wonder-filled place. Our school is a Title I school, which means we have a high percentage of students living in poverty. Even with the hardships they face, my students still arrive to school eager to learn and grow.
100% of our students are eligible for free lunch and breakfast and many of them are "backpack kids", receiving a backpack of snacks each weekend so they don't go hungry.
Many of their parents work multiple jobs to provide for their families and my students frequently care for younger siblings while their parents work. Despite all the challenges they face, my students still arrive at school eager to learn and grow. My students and their families see education as a key to their success and I am honored to play a role in their journey.
My Project
I recently had a chance to chat with students about their dream classrooms during a teacher workshop.Inspired by these students, I am requesting materials which will support their need for movement. When asked to design their ideal classroom, students described a room that provided flexibility and movement and was kid-centered.
Wobble stools, balance balls and bouncy bands are innovative products that give kids freedom to move and get the "wiggles" out.
The bouncy bands will go on our current chairs and stools, transforming them from dull seats to dynamic movement makers! The cart will provide storage for supplies that were previously kept in desks, and can be moved as often as the kids need to move. Yoga mats will be used to signal a student needs some quiet time. We practice mindfulness in our class and kids will be able to grab a yoga mat and have independent time when they need it.
"Scoot!" is a classroom game my kids love; they "scoot" around the room to answer questions on note cards. While there is no shortage of questions, we don't have a printer to generate the most essential part of the game, the note cards. With a classroom printer, I'll be able to create more question cards for their favorite game. Getting at least 60 minutes of activity a day is so important for their health and this game gets them up and moving!
