The 20 first graders in my classroom are a spirited, fun-loving group. They are incredible tech experts--always trying to help me troubleshoot when ever I run into a tech jam! These precocious 6 and 7 year-olds also love to move and the more energy the get out, the better they seem to learn.
This brilliant group of techy wiggle-worms are from diverse backgrounds.
Some have non-traditional family structures, some hear a language other than English at home, and some have unique medical needs. They all, however, are united in their love of technology, their need for movement, and their love of sharing their accomplishments with one another!
My Project
With four Power Bands activity trackers shared by turns among my class of 20 students and their teachers, my vivacious first graders will be able to challenge themselves to keep more active than their teachers! They love to play math games against the teachers--and now they will have a chance to see if they can use up as much energy as we do as well!
My students do better as learners when they have an opportunity to engage in vigorous movement and play--and now they'll be able to do this for a good cause!
Unicef Power Bands not only track activity, but also allow kids to earn Power Points that are converted to donations of food for malnourished children around the globe. My students love to compete, to use technology, and most of all they also love to do good in the world--this project will help them to do all three! They will feel like superhero allies for hungry kids while they are also doing themselves a lot of good: keeping fit and getting their bodies and minds ready for learning.
