A house cannot be built without a foundation. This foundation is also critical to learning advanced math concepts. However, this is a challenge many 4th graders face when trying to learn long division, the addition/subtraction of fractions, and even how to solve word problems.
My students are fourth graders coming from a variety of types of households.
Many are living with extended family, only one parent, or in the midst of conditions that are not the best for children. However, there are also students with supportive parents and families working hard to give their children a better future. Our school is a Title 1 school that is making great gains in test scores and motivating students to take responsibility for their own education.
Our school is adopting a new sports theme throughout the building this year. We are hoping to encourage team work and physical activity during the learning process. In looking for solutions to reoccurring areas of weakness, I thought of an out-of-the-box approach to practicing the basic multiplication and division facts. We will use the basic facts kits to learn songs and create chants of the tables to use during our jump roping exercises. I want to use the instructional DVD to aid in teaching students jump roping technique and safety tips. We will begin with single ropes for individuals while reciting easy multiplication tables. As the year goes we will progress to long ropes and maybe even double dutch while singing the ever dreaded 6, 7, & 8 division tables.
I want my students to feel successful.
I feel this project gives many opportunities for individuals to find their own success. I ultimately hope that students will be able to move to advanced math concepts being able to multiply and divide with ease and lack of embarrassment from peers. However, students may have jump roping talent that they have never tapped into. Students will also be able to find strengths in keeping rhythm, singing, or success in math when they never have before.
