My Project

Imagine a kinesthetic and auditory reading experience; these are commonly known as “Knit and Lit” or “Story and Stitch” programming. Listening to audiobooks is beneficial because it increases comprehension, vocabulary, and focus. Sewing, knitting, and crocheting are beneficial because they decrease stress, anxiety, and depression. All of the aforementioned activities double as a form of self care and escapism. The students will utilize the crochet hooks, yarn, and embroidery floss to create either a doll, or a lovey for a baby in our school’s onsite daycare. The skeins of yarn requested are representative of the differing skin tones and hair textures of our student body; so, all participants will know that they are seen, heard, valued, and safe in our warm and welcoming library. This type of programming will be engaging and accessible to students with Dyslexia or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, as well as our pregnant and parenting population.

The ultimate goal of this project is a more inclusive book club to get our students hooked reading.
