My Project

As a teacher in this unprecedented time, I see how the pandemic has disproportionately affected academic outcomes across socioeconomic lines.

Help me combat learning loss and promote equity by integrating theater arts in my school.

Educational research shows that participation in theater arts improves academic performance and significantly raises standardized test scores. Working drama into the curriculum would provide a joyful experience for my students and motivate them academically in a way that direct instruction can’t do.

While I am not a theater teacher, I have access to an award-winning arts education company in New York City that provides high-quality professional development for educators in a virtual setting. Through virtual planning meetings, their dynamic instruction team will help me integrate drama into the curriculum, activate our school’s commitment to social-emotional learning, and make equity in the classroom real.

I will work with theater educators to update four humanities units of study to incorporate inquiry and social-emotional learning while aligning with the NY State Learning Standards. Units of study will culminate in arts-based projects that will make learning public, so students have opportunities to “show what they know” and speak with passion and eloquence.

Additionally, I will turnkey this knowledge to my 4th grade teaching team (6 teachers of 78 students) by sharing the integrated arts curriculum and using my classroom as a laboratory classroom, where I will demonstrate teaching strategies while teachers observe. My training will allow me to coach teachers in pre-observational work, work alongside them in a co-teaching model, and debrief after observations to tailor theater work to the needs of each class. Through the laboratory classroom approach, this virtual professional development will, therefore, not just impact my classroom and grade, but also the 750 students in our community.
