Help me give my students their own copies of the novel we would have studied in school. Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan has everything a fourth grader loves. It's full of action, compelling characters, danger, and courage.
When we said goodbye for Spring break, we had no idea that we would be saying goodbye for so long. My kiddos and I miss each other, but at least most of us can connect through Google Classroom.
While technology is great for staying connected, nothing beats the day to day interaction that happens in a classroom.
I want to keep my students engaged in learning beyond interacting with a screen.
My Project
Riding Freedom is an outstanding novel for fourth graders. I don't want distance learning to rob my students of this wonderful text, so I plan to put a copy of the book in each student's hands. Pairing this text with the story of Sybil Ludington gives students opportunities to compare and contrast these stories. Virtual book clubs help kids learn from home.
Through the stories of courageous women in history, kids can learn about determination, overcoming obstacles, and willingness to sacrifice.
These lessons are particularly timely, and kids can draw parallels between the characters they read about, and the heroes they see on t.v. Both texts lend themselves to rich family discussions.
