My Students
My first graders attend a large Title I school with roughly 700 Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Our classroom is made up of 22 diverse students. Approximately 70% of our students are living in poverty and there are 18 different languages spoken at home. We take great pride in the cultural diversity we represent and are consistently inspired by the resiliency of our students. While many of our students do not have the advantages of having attended preschool, they enter the doors every morning eager for new discoveries and new challenges. I want to continue to encourage these learners every step of the way with as many experiences and opportunities as possible. Despite the challenges this may cause, my students are hardworking and determined learners.
My Project
The time that parents spend with their children is impactful and at the same time priceless. Each moment is one of its own, different from all the rest. My goal is to take this time to a meaningful place to enhance the academic progress of each of my first graders. To do this, I am requesting story kits that will be used by my students and families to spend time reading, playing, and learning together. The kits will be used during family reading events at school, as well as sent home to be used and loved by each of my students, their parents, and siblings.
The story kits will take the importance of reading with your child to the next level.
Each story kit includes a book to read and tactile components of the story, this allows each family reading session to turn into an action-packed book learning session. The learning done during family time will then cross over into the classroom, thus making a meaningful impact on my students' academic progress! I am also requesting a storage rack and lapboards to store and use the kits in the classroom.
