My curriculum is filled with opportunities to challenge all achievement groups and designed to develop independent learners who enjoy stepping forward into growth.
Our school's student population is primarily Caucasian and Latino. The programs implemented in the last ten years have truly changed the culture. Lawn areas have been transformed into edible gardens, complete with an amphitheater and stage. Homework Lab and Small Learning Communities are in place to ensure no student's progress or lack of progress is unseen. Clusters for juniors and seniors direct students' pathways, aiding in post-secondary exploration. The possibilities for faculty and students are endless. I am proud to be part of this phenomenal school and community.
My Project
This classroom board game set, "Act your Wage", will be a tactile way for students to apply many principles of personal finance. Currently, students research the cost of a lifestyle they want to have in the future and a career. For many students, the lifestyle they want is beyond their means. While the lesson is valuable, it was also time-consuming; over the years I realized it was overwhelming for most students. I knew it was time for a change. This board game will be a culminating activity after we cover the budgeting and career units.
As an elective teacher, I am always looking for alternative ways for students to apply concepts we have covered in a fun, engaging, tactile, and competitive manner.
I am part of the Next Generation Personal Finance program; they provide curriculum and professional development for personal finance teachers. This game was highly recommended by other educators. I look forward to playing it with my students!
