My Students
I am an elementary Physical Education teacher in Queens, NY. The school district that I am employed at specializes in providing a public school experience for students with varying disabilities. We believe that students of all abilities can reach their full potential in a positive, supportive environment. Our mission is to create an atmosphere of high expectations that fosters independent and expressive individuals.
As a physical educator, I believe that students of all abilities can acquire skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to make appropriate healthy choices for a lifetime.
Students with disabilities are twice as likely to develop health-related issues; it is vital that these individuals understand the importance of physical fitness and healthy living. For my students, Physical Education class is a subject where they can express focus on acquiring and enhancing their individual skills (physical, cognitive, emotional, and social). In addition, PE class may be one out of few environments where the students can achieve the required amount of physical activity.
My Project
This equipment will be instrumental in motivating my students to engage in fitness activities and health-related games. Specifically, the equipment will be used to enhance health-related and skill-related components including but not limited muscle building and endurance, body composition, balance, and agility. In addition, the bean bag veggies and fruits will aid the students in identifying healthy food choices and understanding the importance of a well balanced diet.
Students with disabilities are twice as likely to develop future health-related issues.
One of the factors contributing to this is the lack of fitness and health knowledge, and applying it to real-life situations. These individuals are capable of acquiring the knowledge needed to achieve healthy living and the confidence to apply this knowledge independently.
