Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school with over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. The majority of our students are ELL students with Spanish being their primary language at home. We are also home to a program for students with severe and significant needs. These students are non verbal, have significant cognitive delays and many have life threatening medical conditions.
Music is the one place where everyone is learning a new language!
This levels the playing field for our newcomers, as well as our students who have grown up in the United States. Music is also a class that our severe needs students are able to attend and participate in a general education setting.
My Project
I have been so fortunate the past few years and have been able to give all of my students the opportunity to play and experience several instruments before they leave for Middle School. Right now we are working on playing the Acoustic Guitar for our upcoming music programs.
We are requesting acoustic guitars for everyone in my classes to use.
I am currently seven guitars short of a full class set. My students have been really good about taking turns, but I want them all to be able to play together. I want every student fulling engaged and learning while in my room.
I have changed my classroom into a modern band classroom. The engagement from my students has been amazing. My students are excited to come to music and are excited to learn new instruments. This has been my dream and I'm so excited it's happening!
