This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves an ethnically diverse student population in San Leandro, CA. Approximately 30% of students are English Language Learners and 72% qualify for free/reduced lunch. Students receive music class once a week in 1st through 5th grade in which they sing, and play xylophone and drums. Starting in fifth grade students may choose another instrument (violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone).

As the first dual-language bilingual school in the district, this is a place where innovation is happening.

We've launched a bucket drumline ensemble, began guitar instruction for 4th and 5th graders, and this year will bring back the choral program.

My Project

At Washington Elementary, 4th and 5th graders will be learning the basics of how to play guitar. We begin with very easy songs like Mary Had A Little Lamb and progress to slightly more challenging songs like Mexican Hat Dance. By the end, students have learned the fundamentals of how to read TAB and learn their own songs at home! This year we will be learning more chords and be incorporating more school-wide performance opportunities for the students.

Learning guitar, and music education in general, opens up doors for students for the rest of their lives.

Studies show that students who study music do better academically and are more successful later in life.
