Help me give my students clocks, flashcards, notebooks and other hands-on tools they need to finally "get" math. Many are challenged with keeping their work lined-up. This, in turn, results with confusion with place value, fractions, decimals, etc.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela
Our classroom is full of 20 incredible students, each with an amazing life stories.
They work so hard to master difficult concepts, even if they don't view themselves as "smart" or "good" at school. They are making great strides, and overcoming so many challenges in their path through our community and their support of each other. They are becoming more independent and taking more responsibility for their learning. Of these, 3 are receiving services, 4 are second language learners and 4 have been retained in previous grades,
One of the most challenging subjects for my students is math. Math in 4th grade combines all four operations with both fractions and decimals. We have been working so hard on skills as well as self esteem for our 4th graders.
My Project
Our students learn best by doing things and moving objects. Composition graph paper will allow them to take ownership of their work by organizing it spatially with all the "numbers" literally lined up. They will literally see how the math adds-up.
Our students need to literally "see" how math works.
The place value signs will allow them to actively use place value to solve math problems and gain an understanding of how place value, specifically decimals, work and are connected to fractions. The fraction materials, including clocks will help students understand how fractions work in our world and form our thinking.
