Because ACEA is an alternative school, we serve a very specific population of students who haven't been successful in a traditional school environment. Our student population has a high free or reduced lunch rate and most of our students are first-generation college-going students. At least 90% of this year's graduating class will be full Pell eligible.
Despite being described as economically disadvantaged, our students are extremely hard-working, determined, and full of life.
They thrive in the highly independent environment of an alternative school and participate in our school culture, enriching it with their own unique gifts and perspectives. While juggling family responsibilities, part-time jobs, and the daily struggles of navigating young adulthood, our students approach each day and task with enthusiasm. They readily ask for help when they need it and are quick to understand the next step.
It is apparent that our students value their futures. The college process can be quite challenging for economically disadvantages students as it requires countless pieces of paperwork and documentation, many of which require creative problem solving to obtain. They hold on to the promise of achieving their dreams even though they struggle academically or financially. They value education in a way that inspires.
My Project
At ACEA we celebrate our college signing day by having a pizza party and having our entire school watch the graduates "sign" for their college. This year we want to add to the celebration by playing sports outside and giving away prizes. We make a video to show at Decision Day for our graduates with our staff giving the graduates bits of wisdom that will make thehm successful in college and post-high school life.
Most of our students come from low-income backgrounds; the prizes we plan to give away, like kitchen appliances and headphones, along with the sports supplies for our celebration, will make all the difference.
