My students need fluency instruction and materials that are at thier indiviual levels and that are tailored to meet their needs while boosting their self confidence.
I am a reading resource teacher who services students in grades 1st-4th. The demographic of my school are 20% low income, 13% students with disabilities, and 19% English language learners. My students are excited and eager to learn and build their confidence levels in reading. The all have the desire to be a great reader and want so badly to achieve their reading goals. Unfortunately, they come to me saying “I can’t do it”, I don’t know how to read”. Their self-esteem and self-image are greatly affected because they feel they are either a “bad” reader or they are vastly aware that they are not at the same reading abilities as their peers.
To quote Dr. Seuss “The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go."
My students aspire to be reading world travelers! They have the desire and the will to be great readers. They need the time and support, and resources, in order to achieve that goal. I want to make sure I am giving my students the best instruction, with the greatest materials, in order to make them lifelong readers!
My Project
Fluency plays a vital role in reading and most teachers only focus mainly on the number of words read. Fluency is much more than how many words can be read in a minute. Fluency is the ability to read text accurately, quickly, and with prosody. 30 years of reading research has indicated that fluency is one of the critical building blocks of reading, because fluency development is directly related to comprehension.
The future of the world is in my classroom today.
I am asking for a fluency kit to help improve my students reading abilities. The kit breaks up reading in 3 different visual ways and allows me to instruct them at their individual levels verses their grade level. This kit comes with everything I need to instruct a small group or an individual student. It is my job to make sure I empower my students to believe in themselves and to become the best readers that they can be. Improving their fluency doesn't just improve their reading abilities, it also enhances their self-esteem and self-image; therefore making them a more productive citizen in the future.
