This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hi! I am a fifth grade teacher. During the day, I teach mathematics and science to 42 culturally diverse ESL students. After school, I run a book club with 10 members of the fifth grade class. For 2 hours, we discuss complex literary devices such as: foreshadowing, metaphors, imagery, tone, etc.

The majority of students I serve are faced with detrimental circumstances beyond their control, such as: homelessness and low socioeconomic status.

Book club gives my students something to look forward to each week.

My Project

Accio books! In the magical world of Harry Potter, “Accio,” (the summoning spell), is a charm that summons an object towards the caster. The members of my book club would like to summon the complete Harry Potter series!

By setting up a Book Club for my students I hope to encourage students to read more and to explore titles they may not be exposed to otherwise.

J.K. Rowling’s series is full of opportune comprehension questions, higher-level thinking skills, and literary elements that extend beyond grade level. This, in turn, will help strengthen students’ reading skills and increase state test scores.
