Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students from my school live in one of the highest inner-city poverty areas in the entire nation. Most of our students struggle every day. Other students are new English language learners who survive day-to-day and view coming to this public school as the positive way to escape their otherwise less than satisfactory lives. Others don't even have homes to go home to.
These are good people.
I am privileged to work with some of the best people I've ever met. I've seen all of us go over and above for each of our students every single day. We provide students with access to after-school programs, necessary technology, often even basic ADL materials, and even with major budget cuts, we can no longer afford to fund many student-centered projects and sometimes the even technology is up to teachers to explore and provide.
My Project
I have the amazing opportunity to pull students out of class and give them the one-to-one or small group instruction they specifically need to excel. I just have one problem: resources. If I had this iPad with me, I could work individually with 3D reading programs, math tutorials, and Pixar Shorts. If the students see me with an iPad they'll light up knowing we'll be able to access some fun learning materials. I need this tool so much because it enables learning on a level my students rarely access at home. Only I can't afford to purchase one with all the other materials I need throughout the year.
