My Students
"L" loves to play games and interact with toys and items within the classroom. He struggles to interact socially with his peers during activities, breakfast/lunch, and at our recess/break time. He wants to have access to items that will make it easier for him to interact with his peers in the classroom and his non-disabled peers outside the classroom.
My students all have a moderate to severe intellectual disability.
Their future isn't career or college based. Their future is life skills and independent living skills based. They struggle to participate in sporting activities and recreational activities with their peers. They require exposure to these simple activities, that we take for granted, in multiple ways and in multiple environments. Providing them the opportunity to exercise and engage in a sporting activity for recreational/leisure purposes will be amazing. My students would benefit from the independence and freedom of learning a new sport/activity for health and wellness purposes, as well as, their socialization skills.
My Project
From the perspective of one my students: I want to develop stronger socialization and recreation skills. I am not the best at interacting with my peers at lunch and recess. I often talk to myself or walk around alone. I want to have things in my room to play with, that interests me, and that I can share with others.
This project requests one Nintendo Wii deluxe set with remotes and nunchuks, youth footballs, volleyballs, portable soccer nets, one football set, and Wii programs including LEGO Harry Potter, Super Mario Bros.
and Mario Kart Racing to support a variety of classroom activities. This materials will be used to create a sports and recreational schedule that gives our class time to practice exercise, sports, and recreation skills. We'll also use the outdoor sports items to set up games with peers during recess.
This project is important to me because we will be able to work on things that we need to learn how to do. It is very hard for me and my classmates to learn to interact with other people outside our classroom doing things like that involve sports and recreation. This project will give us things that will make it easier to invite people to our classroom and interact with them.
