My Students

Kids love to create, and learn best when actively engaged. As 21st century learners, young people must continue to develop electronic literacy. As students share their voices and learn about the world around them, they're motivated to learn and share more. Chromebooks will be the catalyst for this!

My students are amazing!

We live in a small mountain community in Northern California. My first through fifth grade students, many of whom are English Learners need additional support with reading, writing, and language development. They thrive in learning environments where they feel safe taking risks; where they can perceive reading and writing as positive and attainable; and where they know their voices will be heard and honored by those around them. Our elementary school is surrounded by redwood trees and a wide variety of wildlife, which allows our students to experience nature firsthand, develop an appreciation of our environment, and to feel safe in their surroundings. There are a multitude of benefits of living in a small, tight-knit community. However, my hope is that access to Chromebooks will also grant them a greater understanding of our global community and a wide range of lifelong learning opportunities.

My Project

Through the use of Chromebooks, my students will be able to gain access to a wide range of reading materials, including interactive texts. They will also be able to create and share their writing in numerous ways, such as electronic book-making, presentation development, and making their voices heard through a variety of other means. Many of my students are interested in blogging, or reading the blogs of others, they would like to gain access to information through videos, and perhaps even make their own to share. Chromebooks will increase their accessibility to the world around them, as well as motivate them to want to write to share their voices, and increase their reading abilities to access the ideas of others. The benefits of increasing my students' electronic literacy, and all of the options for doing so are more numerous than I can name or even imagine. Yet, my students' potential for innovation and creativity is boundless, and they will teach me in the process!

Co-learning between my students and myself is just one of the potential benefits of using Chromebooks in my small literacy intervention groups.

My hope is that implementation of this tool will help to close the gap between my students and their peers who are reading, writing, and using language more proficiently. The added benefit of the Acer C720p is the option of a touchscreen, as well as a keyboard, which adds to the accessibility of these tools. Many thanks for your consideration!
