My Students

My classroom is a substantially separate pre-kindergarten class made up of seven amazing students. Each one of my student are unique in their own way ,coming in with their own strengths and challenges. All have a diagnosis of developmental delay and/or autism and are working on learning the rules and structure of a school setting. With their diagnosis comes some obstacles such as communication, social, motor, and cognitive delays. We are located in a low socioeconomic community and lack the proper funding to help meet all my students learning needs. Despite these challenges my goal for my students is to instill a love of learning in school and become as independent as possible in the school setting.

My Project

The majority of the little learners that pass through my Prekindergarten center based classroom have an autism diagnosis, communication disorder, and/or are English language learners. Having access to colored visuals helps these young learners access language through pictures. Visual boards give students that do not yet have the ability to speak express their most basic needs and wants such as asking for the bathroom or expressing their feelings. Communication boards can be shared with families at home to help ease frustrating situations where communication break downs occur and therefor reduce behaviors often seen in the home. Using pictures to create schedules allows my students to have a predictable school day and ease anxiety.

Visuals aids and autism go hand in hand in order to have the most successful classroom and learning environment.
